Awash National Park: is a national park in Ethiopia Located at the border of Oromia region and Afar state, the park covers an area of 827 square kilometres, most of it lies at an altitude of 900 meters. Spanning across the southern tip of the Afar Region and the north-eastern corner of the East Shewa Zone of Oromia, this park is 225 kilometres east of Addis Ababa (and a few kilometers west of Awash and east of Metehara).

The park is best known for its rich biodiversity and rural landscapes. The region is subject to a bimodal rainfall pattern a rainy season followed by a dominant dry season which can last up to 10 months.

This itinerary provides a balanced mix of adventure, wildlife exploration, and relaxation, allowing you to fully experience the natural beauty and diversity of Awash National Park. Adjustments can be made based on your preferences and specific interests.

Day 1: Awash

Morning:

  • Drive to Awash National Park (approximately 4-5 hours drive).
  • Check-in at your accommodation inside or nearby the park. There are options ranging from campsites to lodges, depending on your preference and budget.

Afternoon:

  • Enjoy a relaxed lunch at your accommodation or a picnic in a designated area within the park.
  • Start your exploration with a visit to the Awash Falls. These stunning waterfalls are one of the highlights of the park, especially during the wet season.
  • Take a short hike around the falls area, spotting wildlife and enjoying the scenery.
  • Return to your accommodation for dinner and a restful evening, preparing for the next day's adventure.
Day 2: Expedition to Mount Fentale

Morning:

  • Have an early breakfast to fuel up for the day's hike.
  • Depart for Mount Fentale, which is an extinct volcano located within the park.
  • Start the ascent to Mount Fentale. The hike usually takes around 3-4 hours, depending on your fitness level and pace.
  • Along the way, enjoy breath-taking views of the surrounding landscapes and keep an eye out for wildlife such as baboons, warthogs, and various bird species.

Afternoon:

  • Reach the summit of Mount Fentale, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the park and beyond.
  • Take some time to rest and have a packed lunch while soaking in the scenery.
  • Descend back to the base of the mountain, enjoying a different perspective of the park.
  • Return to your accommodation for dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Day 3: Game Drive and Departure

Morning:

  • Wake up early to embark on a game drive through Awash National Park.
  • Your experienced guide will lead you through the park, pointing out various wildlife species such as oryx, kudu, gazelles, dik-diks, and possibly even lions and leopards if you're lucky.
  • Enjoy the serene beauty of the park as you drive through diverse habitats, including savannah, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests.

Afternoon:

  • Stop for a picnic lunch at a scenic spot within the park, surrounded by nature and wildlife.
  • Continue your game drive, exploring different areas of the park and maximizing your chances of spotting more animals.
  • As the afternoon draws to a close, start making your way back to the park entrance.
  • Depart from Awash National Park, either heading back to Addis Ababa or continuing your journey to other destinations.
