Erta Ale

Erta Ale is an active shield volcano, known for its persistent lava lake, one of the few in the world. The volcano has been erupting continuously for over a century, with its last major eruption occurring in 2005. Its name translates to "smoking mountain" in the local Afar language. Erta Ale is situated in the Danakil Depression, a low-lying area known for its extreme temperatures and harsh conditions.

Day 1-2: Arrival in Addis Ababa

Arrive in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia.

Spend the first day relaxing and adjusting to the new time zone.

On day 2, explore Addis Ababa's attractions such as the National Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, and Mercato, one of Africa's largest markets.

Day 3: Addis Ababa - Drive to Awash National Park

Depart from Addis Ababa and drive to Awash National Park (approximately 4-5 hours).

Upon arrival, check into your lodge or campsite.

In the afternoon, embark on a game drive to explore the park's diverse wildlife, including oryx, kudu, baboons, and bird species.

Day 4: Explore Awash National Park

Spend the day exploring Awash National Park.

Enjoy additional game drives or guided nature walks to discover the park's scenic landscapes, including the Awash River Falls and the Fantalle Crater.

Day 5: Drive to Semera

Depart from Awash National Park and drive to Semera, the capital of the Afar Region (approximately 6-7 hours).

Along the way, stop for lunch in a local town and enjoy scenic views of the Rift Valley.

Day 6-7: Trek to Erta Ale Volcano

Begin your trek to Erta Ale Volcano, one of the world's most active lava lakes (approximately 3-4 hours).

Spend the night camping near the volcano's crater rim and marvel at the mesmerizing sight of the glowing lava lake.

On day 7, explore the surroundings of Erta Ale, including the dramatic landscapes of the Afar Depression.

Day 8: Return to Semera

Descend from Erta Ale and return to Semera.

Rest and relax after the challenging trek.

Day 9: Drive to Babile Elephant Sanctuary

Depart from Semera and drive to Babile Elephant Sanctuary (approximately 3-4 hours).

Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and enjoy a guided tour of the sanctuary.

Day 10: Explore Babile Elephant Sanctuary

Spend the day exploring Babile Elephant Sanctuary.

Embark on a guided safari to observe the sanctuary's resident elephant herds and other wildlife, including oryx, gazelles, and bird species.

Day 11-12: Drive to Harar

Depart from Babile Elephant Sanctuary and drive to Harar, one of Ethiopia's oldest and most fascinating cities (approximately 2-3 hours).

Spend the next two days exploring Harar's historic sites, including the ancient walled city, Harar Jugol, and the colorful markets.

Day 13: Drive back to Addis Ababa

Depart from Harar and drive back to Addis Ababa (approximately 7-8 hours).

Upon arrival, check into your hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner at a traditional Ethiopian restaurant.

Day 14: Departure

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have some free time for last-minute souvenir shopping or additional sightseeing in Addis Ababa. Transfer to the airport for your departure flight, marking the end of your adventure in Ethiopia.
